Franz Marc painted it in 1913, while living in Ried near Murnau in Bavaria. Marc was an important representative of Expressionism and a co-founder of the artist group "Der Blaue Reiter". The picture was painted during this period of intense collaboration with the group and represents Marc's love of nature and his search for a spiritualistic art form.
