Biography Johann Brandstetter
Born 1959 in Altötting, Germany. He lives and works in Neuötting.
Education as a restorer and church painter. Outside of his range of work, he turned early on to free painting and illustration.
Painter and illustrator Johann Brandstetter implements his "life's works" with both classical and new techniques, thus creating multi-layered pictorial worlds. Through his art, he calls for a reconsideration of ecological systems and the role that humans play in them.
In which he explores, transcends and redefines the boundaries between art and science, he poses the question of the meaning and potential of art as a process that is derived from the observation of nature and makes statements via art about supposedly art-distant, mostly scientific topics.
His ideas arise on trips, on excursions, quasi "plein air", from the contemplation and deepening into the concrete nature. Brandstetter records the ephemeral of these states, i.e. observations and experiences, as his "material" in travel diaries. In the "translation" of the personal notes into an independent, universally valid artistic work or drawing, graphic or painterly language lies the actual artistic creative process – this takes place in the studio.
His concern is always to make highly complex processes of nature visually understandable. He is concerned with the essentials in the literal sense.
