In a letter from Vincent van Gogh to his brother Theo: "In my café picture I tried to express that the terrace is a place where you can go crazy... I tried to do this through the contrasts of soft pink, blood red and dark red wine colour , through a sweet green a la Louis XV and Veronese green contrasting with yellow-green and hard blue-green."
